Great Plains Indian Tribes
The Great Plains Indian Tribes were situated in the present states of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. The Indian tribes lived in many types of houses before they migrated to the Great Plains including Longhouses and Earth Lodges. They later lived a nomadic lifestyle, using tepees as shelters and hunting buffalo.
Great Basin Indian Tribes
The lands occupied by many of the Great Basin Indian Tribes consisted of barren wasteland of deserts, salt flats and brackish lakes in the states of Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Montana. The shelters and houses of the Indian tribes were Brush Shelters, Lean-tos and Wickiups.
California Indian Tribes
The California Indian Tribes lived in the mild temperate climate of California encompassing coastal regions, rivers and lakes. The tribes lived in various types of houses and shelters including grass mat houses, kiich houses, Cedar Bark Lodges, Redwood Plank Houses and semi-subterranean pit houses or earthlodges
Northwest Pacific Coast Indian Tribes
The Northwest Pacific Coast Indian Tribes lived in the present day states of Oregon and Washington, were famous for their totem poles and lived in Plankhouses.
Plateau Indian Tribes
The Plateau Indian Indian Tribes inhabited Northeast Oregon, Southeast Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The Plateau tribes originally lived in Tule Mat Lodges and also lived in semi-subterranean Pit houses or earthen lodges. The Plateau Indian Tribes used Dugout Canoes as their mode of transport.
Northeast Woodland Indian Tribes
The lands inhabited by the Northeast Woodland Indian Tribes extended mainly across the New England States, lower Canada, west to Minnesota, and north of the Ohio River. Typical shelters were birch bark Longhouses and Wigwams and they travelled in either Birch Bark or Dugout canoes.
Southeast Indian Tribes
The Southeast Indian Tribes were located in the states of Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Florida. The types of shelters and houses of the Southeastern tribes varied according to their location and included the famous Caddo 'Beehive' Thatched Grass Houses, Chickees and Wattle and Daub Houses.
Arctic Indian Tribes
The Artic Indian Tribes were located in present-day Alaska, Canada and Greenland. They lived in Igloos and Barabaras.
Southwest Indian Tribes
The Southwest Indian Indian Tribes were located the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Texas. The farmers lived in villages of Adobe (pueblo) houses and the hunters lived in Hogans, brush shelters or wickiups.
