There are so many Native Indian tribes that it is not surprising that sometimes attitudes towards different animals and their symbols differ in interpretation. The fox is one such animal. The Northern woodland tribes viewed the fox as a benign animal. To these tribes the fox was a noble and wise animal symbolizing the gift of anticipation, observation and stealth. The Indian tribes of the Great Plains take a different view believing that the fox was a Trickster playing pranks or, even worse, would lead a person to their death.
